Toyota Repair: Engine/Exhaust Noise in Toyota Tarago, toyota tarago, generic answer

Question
I have a Toyota Tarago,1991, 5 speed manual with 240,000 km on the clock. The car is regularly serviced, in accordance with the manual. Under power there is a high pitched zzzzzz sound in the exhaust. The engine must be burning some oil, as there is a slight smell of burnt oil from the exhaust. But it is not enought to noticeably lower the oil level between changes, or to blow smoke from the exhaust.
The catalytic converter has been replaced. The sound has been evident for over 12 months.
Is there a problem here, or is the engine just getting old?

Answer
I have no idea what a Tarago is, I'm sure it is called another name in the US but I don't have a clue what that may be, for now I'll give you a generic answer, there is probably a leak in the exhaust system somewhere or there is a heat shield on the exhaust that is cracked or loose, if you need more help give me some more information such as, is it a truck, van, passenger car, etc., and give me a model number, you can locate it on the sticker on the door, please be as specific as possible.
