Toyota Repair: 1995 Toyota Camry 4cyl Idle Air Control Valve Cleaning?, air control valve, toyota camry

Question
Hello,

I have a 1995 Toyota Camry Wagon LE 2.2L I4, Automatic Transmission.

Symptom: In any gear other than "Park" or "Neutral" I get an erratic idle.  Normal idle is around 900, it will sporadically start dropping to about 200 and jumping back to 900, sometimes actually stalling out.  Once I am moving (not idling) the problem seems to go away.

Suspected problem:  Idle Air Control.  I have already done a tune up (new plugs, cap, rotor, wires).  I have checked the PCV valve and it's a fine (a little oily though).  After reading your other answers my next try will be to detach the throttle body for cleaning (with carb cleaner right?), it also seems like the Idle Air Control Valve (is that another name for Idle Speed Control Valve? different manuals seem to use different names) should be cleaned at the same time since I'll have the throttle body off.

What should I use to clean the idle air control valve?

Thanks very much in advance.

Answer
Either terminology is correct, the IAC and ISC valves are the same, carb cleaner or throttle body cleaner works very well, both are available at autoparts stores, use an old toothbrush to clean the bore of the throttle body and the plate and remove the isc valve and spray the inside to remove the black carbon deposits.
