The sunroof on our 98 camry became askew...I think one of the cables broke and as a result of going sideways the seal on the glass has been damaged.  The dealer quoted $1300 to fix.  Is this very difficult if we can get the parts from a local junk yard?  Where would I get instructions or a diagram?
This sunroof slides open and then also pops up (mechanically).  I am fairly certain that the motor is ok.

You're going to have a hard time finding sunroof cables at a junk yard, you may be able to find the glass part with the seal at a reasonable price but the cables have to be replaced, this is an extremely difficult job, I know, because I have replaced a few, I recommend that you get another estimate to replace the cables, we normally charge less than $400 to replace them, I suggest trying to find the glass at a used parts place if it needs to be replaced.
Another queston---
Then....if we don't want to spend that much and can live without the sunroof, what product could I use to waterproof where the seal/gasket has been torn.  I have been told not to use silicone.  What do you think?

Answer
I don't know to what extend the seal is damaged but if it's only a small area any water getting in will drain out through the drain tubes out of the bottom of the car, you can try spraying the area with a water hose and see if any water will leak inside, silicone sealer will work so will duct tape.
