Toyota Repair: Warning lights, emission control device, toyota avalon

Question
While driving to work my wife said a dash light came on stating Malfunction Indicator Lamp. This is a 2000 Toyota Avalon 6 cyc. automatic with 46,000 miles. Is there any info you can give me regarding this light and what may be malfunctioning? Can it be driven to the dealer? Thanks for any help. Joe

Answer
Most check engine lights are related to emission control device malfunctions, I recommend that you drive it to the toyota dealer and have them hook up the diagnostic scantool to see what the MIL code is, if you like you can get back to me and let me know what they say before a repair attempt is made.
