someone is willing to give me a 1985 tercel 4wd wagon  with 212,000 miles on it. They say it just stopped suddenly one day 8 months ago when they pulled up to a restaurant. Starts just fine-seems to idle good. Looks like brake fluid leaks. No nothing on the clutch-standard tranny of course. You can shift thru all the gears with no movement and no stalling out. In reverse it seems to want to go-there's a pull there-but acts like frozen? This person said it was just a $30 clutch plate..hmmmm..could it be something simple or easy to test?Is there any tests I can do to help narrow it down?
Answer -
Yes it looks like the clutch is the problem, the transmission has to be removed and the clutch pressure plate, disc and release bearing have to be replaced, the cost depends on whether you use aftermarket or toyota factory parts plus the labor if you have a repair shop do the repair.

Tnks for your reply. Would this be a case where the aftermarket parts can be just as good as toyota parts? Is it the same thing as a clutch kit?
Could this be a fairly easy DIY job or would special tools be required?

Answer
Aftermarket parts are ok to use, if you can get a complete clutch kit go ahead and use it, there are lots of tools required to remove the transmission and replace the clutch, the only special tool needed is a clutch disc pilot shaft to line up the disc and a pilot bearing puller.
