Toyota Repair: 4Runner transmission, transmission cooler, point thanks

Question
1996 4Runner w/ 103,000, we tow a boat weighing appox. 2500# we do a little bit of mountain driving, but mostly fairly flat valley terrain In your opinion do I need to add a transmission cooler? No heating problems to this point. Thanks Jeff,

Answer
If your 4-Runner is eqipped with the towing package it already has an transmission cooler, actually two, one is built into thr bottom of the radiator and there should be an external one, check in front of the radiator if it has there is no need for additional cooling in my opinion. What's more important is fluid change at regular intervals, the idea is to keep the fluid clean, adding an additional cooler may extend the life of the fluid, the enemy of transmission fluid is heat, add a cooler or change the fluid more often the end result is the same.
