i have oil in my water, oil consumption. seems to run fine 184,000 miles. no water in oil.head gasket?1990 truck 22r 4 cyl 2wd
Answer -
A blown headgasket normally pushes water into the oil, almost never the other way around simply because of the pressure difference between combustion chambers and the cooling system, so the oil has to enter wherever the oil pressure is greater than the internal combustion pressures or just by leakage with the engine off, could be a crack in the cylinder head or possibly a worn timing chain that rubbed through into the water jacket in the timing cover, check the timing chain especially if it makes a lot of noise when cold.so, should i replace head gasket, timing chain, or bury it?
Answer -
I think it would be a good idea to just find a used engine this will probably save you a lot of money, this engine has a major problem and the most cost effective way to go about it is to find a good used engine or check with the local parts store to see if any remanufactured engines are available, the other option is to just trade it in on another vehicle.  wow! wasnt exactly the answer i was hoping for, but i appreciate the reply. im curious as to how this little "problem" occured, as i was under the impression, that toyotas run 'forever'? i have only had it a few months, but now i am not sure if i want to buy another one. i drive 100 miles a day to work and need reliable, transpo...any recomendations? thankyou for your time.

Answer
The truck is 14 years old and has 184,000 miles on it and things do go wrong especially if there is little  maintenance, I'm not sure exactly what is wrong but oil in the coolant is not good, there are ways to have it checked as to why this is happening, from where I am I can only give you my best educated guess, I recommend that you take it to a toyota dealer and have it diagnosed and then make a decision based on that, and no, even toyota engines don't run"forever".
