Toyota Repair: Power Window Regulator & Motor, camry xle, power window regulator

Question
Ted:

re: 1993 Camry XLE

Left Front (Driver's) Window will go down, but not up.  I know the motor works, and the cable goes up and down. I opened up the door panel (without breaking too much of it) and discovered after prying around for an hour, that the regulator is broken.  Actually just one itsy teeny little PLASTIC piece.  Are there by chance any service campaigns for this.  Seems like bad engineering to me. The replacement part from the dealer has been
beefed up in this area.

Dealer wants $90 for regulator and $350 (yikes) for regulator and motor.  I have thought about buying only the regulator, but I am nervous about the motor spring when attaching the regulator to the motor.

I consider myself rather mechanically inclined, so I will tackle most repairs, especially when money savings are involved.

What is your opinion? Spend the $350 or risk the $90 on just the regulator?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
About 99.9% of the time it's the regulator that is the problem, check with the dealer because some of the earlier models the regulator and motor came as one unit, if you can get just the window regulator go this way, it's not that hard to replace it, unbolt the motor from the regulator, be careful, the regulator is is spring loaded and will snap back when the motor is removed, just preload the regulator and attach the motor to the new regulator, an assistant who doesn't mind having their fingers amputated may help(JUST KIDDING) but be careful when doing this, squeeze the regulator to about the midway point and hold it there while attaching the motor and you will do just fine.
