Toyota Repair: Adjusters locking brakes against drum., drum brakes, wheel cylinders

Question
I have a 72 Corolla 2-DR sedan (1200cc 3K-C engine) with disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on the rear.  When I've had a brake job and non-Toyota brake shoes were installed on drum brakes the shoes eventually adjust themselves right up against the drums.  The result is the brakes dragging and overheating when simply driving along.

It sounds like the brake's automatic adjusters are at fault.
The automatic adjusters work when you set the parking brake.
They gradually move the shoes out a little as they wear so you don't have too much space between the shoe and the drum.
Trouble is, mine don't leave any space between the shoe and the drum!

I could just use Toyota shoes, but in the last few years those have started causing problems too.  And they are getting hard to find.

Any ideas as to what's causing this and what to do about it?

Answer
I think your problem is hydraulic rather than mechanical, I recommend replacing the master cylinder and also the wheel cylinders if the show any signs of leakage, the master cylinder has a front and a rear circuit, the could be an internal problem with the valving in the rear circuit.
