Toyota Repair: 1992 toyota camry freon, r 12 freon, toyota camry

Question
I have a 1992 Toyota Camry. I was wondering if the freon in it is R 12 or R134a.

Answer
Toyota started using R-134 in 1994 so yours is R-12, I highly recommend that you consider changing over to 134 freon, it's not expensive and you can buy the kit at most autoparts stores, just follow the instructions, the only thing that has to be done is to remove all of the remaining R-12 freon and then you install the new service valves, you should have a qualified shop remove the old freon it's illegal to release it into the atmosphere.
Consider that from a cost standpoint, the 134 is about $15 a pound whereas the R-12 is about $55 a pound.
