how to remove and install heater core? is it safe to bypass in the meantime?

it's ok to bypass it.. just use the proper hose and clamps.
your better off getting a chiltons book for this one.. it would take me 10 pages to properly explain it. not that it is complicated but in order for u to understand it, it would be best for u to have the book... FEEL FREE TO WRITE ME WITH ANY PROBLEMS THAT U RUN INTO OR ADVISE ON SOMETHING. GOOD LUCK
