Toyota Repair: Clutch Noise, 1986 toyota tercel, toyota tercel

Question
Hi Ted,
I own a 1986 Toyota Tercel SR-5 4WD 4 Cyl.. I don't know the cc's of the engine. Here's the problem; Whenever I put the clutch in it to put it into first gear it makes this whirring type of sound. There is no problem in shifting and when I release the clutch the noise stops. It doesn't do it in any other gear, just first. I figure it probably needs adjustment which brings me to my main question. First is my diagnosis correct? and if it is, Can I do this adjustment myself? If I can, What tools will I need and what is the proper proceedure to do it. I thank you in advance for any help you can give and I look forward to your response.

Thank You,

Answer
Adjustment has nothing to do with noises it only determines the freeplay between the clutch release bearing and the pressure plate, this noise is probably caused by a bad release bearing, in that case the transmission has to be removed in order to replace it.
