Toyota Repair: 93 Corolla rear brakes, rear shoes, drum brakes

Question
I recently performed a rear brake overhaul on my 93' Corolla (new drums, shoes, and hardware) It took me forever to figure out how to back off the shoes using the starwheel.

After I finished installing the new parts I am having several problems.  Brake light stays on,  emergency brake handle moves too freely, and there is a slight drag that tells me one of the brakes is slightly engaged.

Somone suggested I drive the car in reverse while tapping the brake to set the "automatic adjust".

Did not seem to help
Any idea of what adjustment needs to be made? I am a novice to the extreme.

Answer
brake light on could be one of 2 things.. 1 is low brake fluid in the master cylinder 2. is the brakes are on.
as for the brakes engaging.. this is what you do.... first pressure bleed the system. have a friend help you. have him pump the brake pedal a few times and then hold it down. while he is holdind it down open the bleeder on the brake so it comes out just a squirt then close it. repeat this for a 4 corners. that will get any and all air out of the system.JUST MAKE SURE THERE IS FLUID ALWAYS IN THE RESIVOUR. NEXT THING WHEN ADJUSTING THE DRUM BRAKES THEY SHOULD BE JUST SLIGHTLY DRAGGING BUT NOT DRAGGING UNDERSTAND. AS FOR THE AUTO ADJUST, WHEN YOU SET THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE REAR SHOES THE FIRST TIME WITH THE STAR. YOU ARE SETTING THE BRAKES FOR PROPER CLEARANCE AS I JUST SAID. THE DRIVING IN REVERSE THING AN D USING THE PARKING BRAKE IS STRICKLY TO KEEP THE ADJUSTMENT PROPER not set the inital clearance. hope i helped..paul p.
