Toyota Repair: Toyota RAV4 Backup Lights, toyota rav4, rav 4

Question
I have a 1997 Toyota RAV4 and the backup lights don't work.
Bulbs and fuses are fine. I had read another question on the
Corolla that the wires may be faulty; where are they located on
the RAV? and can I replace/fix them myself, or do I need
expert help? Thanks very much.

Answer
I've never seen a Rav-4 with this wiring problem, does it have a trailer hitch? If so is it toyota or aftermarket?
It's possible that the backup light switch is bad, if it's automatic the switch is located inside the neutral start switch, if manual trans, there is a switch located on the transmission.
The best way to check to see if it's a wiring or switch problem is to turn the key on, engine off, put it in reverse and then check for voltage inside the bulb holder directly at the contact.
