Toyota Repair: AC/Temp Display Light, blown fuses, control knobs

Question
I have a 1999 Toyota 4 Runner Limited.  I have two problems.  The first proplem is that the AC/Temp panel display light went out.  The outside temp information and other displays on the AC panel still work and can be read as long as it's day time, but you can't see it at night because the light doesn't work.  I checked for any blown fuses and didn't find any.  I couldn't find anything in the Manual about this problem or how to go about fixing it.  Does the display for the AC/Temp even have a light behind it?  Or is it like an LCD or something that requires the replacement of the entire unit, even though it's just the light that doesn't work?  If there is a light that can be replaced then how do I take the middle part of the dash (where the stereo, AC panel, Ashtray, and Cig Lighters are) off, to get to it?
The second problem is also light related.  The gear shifter with the P R N D 1 2 light seems to be shorting out.  If you tap on the top of the plastic you can get the light to come on.  Sometimes it's already on and will stay on for awhile but then it will go off and you can't read the P R N D 1 2 display at night.  If there is a light under there then how to I get to it?

Answer
The A/C display is an LCD display and the whole display unit needs to be replaced, to get the faceplate off remove the vent control knobs and the panel there are two screws underneath remove them, the faceplate will pry off.
The shift indicator illumination is peovided with a bulb that can be replaced, you will need to remove the center console, remove the rear part first and then the front part that houses the shifter, you can get to the bulb by turning the bulb holder to release it.
