Toyota Repair: 1996 Toyota Corolla-Using Oil, valve stem seals, valve seals

Question
Dear Sir,
Car has only 40,00 miles on it.I go through about 1 quart per 300 miles of highway speeds (65 to 70mph).  There is no smoke from the back and no oil on driveway or around engine. What could be causing this much oil to use? Is this normal?
  Thanks,
 joe

Answer
No it is not normal, about one quart per 1000 miles is.
I always answer this question the same way, if the engine is using this much oil it is going somewhere, you say there are no leaks so the engine must be using it.
Because of the relatively low mileage I doubt if there is a piston ring problem but which is strictly mileage related and nothing else, however, the valve seals can deteriorate with age so I tend to think that this is where the problem is.
Check very closely for any blue smoke on cold engine starts, if there is replace the valve stem seals.
