Toyota Repair: 1985 Toyota landcruiser a/c, toyota landcruiser, freon leak

Question
My a/c stopped working on my 1995 Landcruiser. Will the a/c stop working if the freon gets too low?  My a/c compressor won't engage when I turn it on.  The fan works and the fuse is good.  Any way of checking the compressor?  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Answer
If the freon pressure is too low the built in pressure switch will the compressor from turning on, there is probably a freon leak.
You can check the compressor by disconnecting the electrical connector from it and applying 12 volts from the battery directly to the compressor, it will turn on regardless of the internal pressure. This way you can at least check to see if the compressor functions, don't do this for any longer than to verify the condition of the compressor.
