Toyota Repair: Transmission Fluid, larry berman, toyota dealer

Question
My son has a 1990 Toyota Corrola. It has about 129,000 miles. The transmission fluid is brown. We purchased the car used. We do not know when the transmission fluid was last changed. Can we change it? Or are we risking damaging the transmission? I have heard that if the transmission fluid has never been changed, you should leave it alone.

Thank you in advance,

Larry Berman

Answer
Hello Larry, welcome to my expert page.
Yes I have heard of this also but disagree, the best thing you can do for this transmission is to get all the old fluid out of there, find a shop or toyota dealer that has a transmission flush machine, it will remove all of the old fluid and replace it with new fluid, it will cost around $100 but well worth it.
