Toyota Repair: torque spec, wheel bearings, wheel bearing

Question
i have a 92 4runner, auto lock hubs, i need to find out how many foot pounds the two nuts holding the wheel bearing is supposed to be tightened.

Answer
Hello James, welcome to my expert page.
I don't think there is a torque spec, at least I have never used one in the many years I have worked on these.
The wheel bearings are of the pre-loaded type, this means there has to be a certain amount of pressure on them, the first nut sets the pre-load and the outer one locks it in place and then it's secured with the lock plate.
The way we do this is to turn the inner nut until it is tight against the bearing and can't turn anymore, then back off about a quarter turn, just enough so the bearing does not have any freeplay but has tension on it, that's the best way I know how to describe it.  It's not that critical, just make sure the bearing doesn't feel loose.
