Toyota Repair: 88 Celica, head gasket, toyota dealer

My husband just bought an 88 Celica with about 160,000 miles. Before we even got home whiteish smoke starting coming from the hood and when we opened the trunk it looked like oil had exploded everywhere. I'd liek to call around to see an approximate repair cost but I have no idea what might be wrong with it. Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be? The guy he bought it off said hehad recently replaced the head gasket and a few other things.

Not sure what is going on here but it sounds like major problems,possibly the engine overheated or there was a major oil leak, I just don't know there are too many possibilities.
I suggest that you have a Toyota dealer look at this unless there is another repair facility you can trust,let me know what they determine the cause may have been and the recommendations to repair the problem if you have any questions regarding this.
