Toyota Repair: Engine stalls when warm, spark plug wires, ground cracks

Question
I have a 1992 Camry(130,000 miles), and it stalls at times when engine is warm. Most of the time , it starts right back, but sometimes it takes a few cranks. Most of the time while idiling or coming to a stop, but sometimes it happens while driving. Other times when freeway driving, engine bogs down, but doesn't stall. Sometimes when first started the engine runs rough, like it's missing. I took it to a repair shop and everyhting tested ok. What could be causing this?
Thanks in advance,
David

Answer
Hello David, welcome to my expert page.
Here are a few items that need to be checked, you didn't say what the repair shop checked but they could not have checked everything to be ok or you wouldn't have this problem.
The most common problem on these engines is that the spark plug wires develop cracks and short to ground, cracks in the distributor cap, or a crack in the coil inside the distributor, remove the distributor cap and check the coil real good for any leaks or cracks especially on the undeside of the coil, they are known to burn through there and cause misfires and stalling and eventually a no start condition. These engines also have problems with distributors and if there is no obvious sign of failure with any of the things I mentioned I suggest replacing it.
