Tractor Repair: Case 2390 with rough powershift, powershift, control valve

Question
Arine,

Thanks for taking my question.  We have a Case 2390 that is somewhat rough shifting under load.  Specifically, when up-shifting from second to third and when down shifting from second to first.  In both cases the tractor comes to a complete stop then lurches forward as the transmission engages.  It doesn't seem to matter how quickly I move the lever, it still hesitates between gears.  Thanks for the help.

Answer
Pressure gauges should be installed on the powershift control valve to check all the clutch pressures first before doing anything else.  All pressures should be 200-210 psi.  If any of the pressures are low, there is a leak inside the powershift.  If pressures are OK, then there could be spools sticking in the valve.  There are retard screws on the valve that can be adjusted to provide some overlap of speeds to smooth out the shifting, but symptoms are usually not as severe as yours.  That's why pressure needs to be checked first to see if there are problems.
