Tractor Repair: Ford 3000 wont crank, starter solenoid, ford 3000

Question
I have a '74 Ford 3000 that will not hit at all. If moving hi/lo range selector in neutral, can hear very faint clicking in motor area, but other than that get no sign of cranking. Any suggestions where to look?

Answer
First make sure the battery is good, then make sure the cable connections are clean and tight.  Check the connections on the starter and where the ground cable grounds to the tractor.  Check that the small terminal on the starter solenoid is getting full voltage when turning the key to start it.  If the voltage is low, then there is a wiring problem or bad key switch.  If everything is OK, then possibly the starter solenoid or starter is bad.  For safety reasons, do not try to jump the starter solenoid unless someone is in the seat holding down the clutch pedal.
