Tractor Repair: Case 970 remotes wont go up or down, point linkage, valve unit

Question
Hello, I'm in need of some assistance. I recently purchased a second hand Case 970. Serial number 8808514. The person I purchased the tractor from only used it for towing a big mulching machine and hooking up to the PTO. They never used the remotes at all. I have serviced the engine, removed all the oil from the gearbox, diffs, powersteering, hydraulics. I have replaced all filters and oils and then nearly all power steering hoses as one after the other they failed on the steel lines due to rust wear they are atached to the top of the radiator. I have also fitted a new forward-reverse cable. Now I'm backed up to the slasher for hook up and the remotes won't go down or up. I can manually lift them and they will lift up. With the engine running I can move both remote controls both from in the cab and from the rear near the 3 point linkage. In the middle position of the controls (neutral maybe or wear they are stuck?) the tractor idles fine but if I push or pull the levers to down or up position it seems to labour the engine? After being horrified to find you maxxed out I started playing with a few things today. Today I did discover that the draft and draft sensing cables are broken. I also removed the valve under the seat with the spring on the front due to giving the front of that valve a little tap with a hammer. It moved in but was tight and wouldn't return on the spring. I only got it off before dark hit so I'll investigate it a little more tomorrow. I was able to tap the other end of the spring valve and it seemed a little tight again but then after some back and forward it freed up and sprung back on the spring. When removing the valve unit the end opposite to the spring which fits into the other comparment I did notice a clevis pin fallout? I'm guessing it will be maybe from the sensing cable bottom bit that drops through the top lid, I'm hoping you can let me know the cheats way to fix that drama which I have developed? I am a little mechanically minded so can do the basics. I would also be interested in a recommendation for a great manual you can suggest? Otherwise a little unsure buying over the net? I did also ring our local case dealer but due to the tractor age they couldn't help? So I'm hoping you can?

Answer
If the engine labors when you move the remote levers, then the remotes are working and building hydraulic pressure, but the pressure is deadheading for some reason.  Possibly the hoses to your implement are not hooked up correctly.  On these old series case tractors, the hydraulic outlets are paired differently than on other machines.  The two couplers on the left are not a pair operated by the same valve, and the two couplers on the right are not a pair operated by the same valve.  In other words, a hydraulic cylinder should have its hoses plugged into the top left and top right, or bottom left and bottom right couplers.  Not both left side or both right side which seems more logical, but is not correct.  Also, a 970 would have been originally equipped with Case style hydraulic couplers which are obsolete.  Implements are usually equipped with modern ISO style couplers on the hoses which are standardized on all brands of newer tractors.  Make sure you have the correct style couplers on the hoses so that they will work correctly with the couplers on the tractor.  Sometimes the old Case couplers were replaced with ISO couplers by someone, or they used adaptors.  The valve with the spring on it is the 3 point hitch control valve and is not related to the remotes.  Not sure what clevis pin you are referring to so I can't help with that.  The hitch won't work anyway with broken cables.  You should be able to get a manual very easily.  Not sure why a Case dealer could not help as manuals are still available from CNH.  I don't know what other sources you may have in your part of the world so buying over the net is probably the easiest.  Just about any tractor parts company sells them and there are millions of manuals on ebay every day.  I was a little nervous buying over the net at first, but after a few transactions I found that it's so fast, convenient, and easy that it's the way to go.  I would definitely recommend getting a manual though.  It will make things much easier and will eliminate guess work and will answer most questions you may have on operation and maintenance.
