Tractor Repair: Fergusen-35, replacement air filters, manure spreader

Question
QUESTION: The tractor is loosing power.  When I hauled the manure spreader to the field, the tractor kept loosing power on the way back to the barn.

ANSWER:    Check the flow of fuel from the tank.  It must run full stream, not just a little dribble.  If necessary, remove the petcock valve from the tank and clean it out.

QUESTION: We will check that out.  Also, could it be a dirty air filter.  Are there two of them on the tractor?  I was looking at replacement air filters and there are inside and outside filters.  I do not understand that.  Thanks.

Answer
Yes, the air filter could cause power loss also, but then the engine would start smoking black because it can't get enough air for the amount of fuel being burned.  You didn't say if this is a gas or diesel engine, but if it's a diesel, replace the fuel filters also.  I forgot to mention that in my previous answer.  Most tractors (but not all) with paper air filters have 2 filters.  Inside the air cleaner there is a larger outer filter and when you remove it, there is a smaller inner filter inside it.  If in doubt, replace them both.  The outer one can be cleaned if it's not real dirty, but you should not try to clean the inner one.  It should only be replaced.  If you do not have an operator's manual, it would be a good idea to get one because there is a lot of useful information in them.
