Tractor Repair: case 885xl 1991, torque amplifier, clutch pack

Question
QUESTION: Hi Arnie

the torque is not working on the 885xl.  a new solonoid was fitted so not that.  does the torque amplifier need to be replaced in total or can it be repaired?

thanks

ANSWER:   Make sure there is power to the solenoid.  If not, check fuses, switch, wiring, and clutch pedal switch.  The hydraulic pressure to the TA clutch can also be checked.  If it would be an internal TA problem, there are repairs that can be made without replacing the entire unit, but it would depend on what is actually wrong.  If there is alot wrong with it, it may be better to get a rebuilt one.

checked fuses, switch, wiring and clutch pedal switch.  all working.
not to sure how to heck oil pressure to TA clutch, pressure at spool valve fine.

how do you take out the TA amplifier?

Answer
Not sure if yours is not shifting between HI and LO, or if it is slipping in one of the speeds.  The solenoid is energised in one position, and turned off in the other.  Trying to remember which is which, but I think it's off in LO and on in HI.  When the solenoid is turned on, it supplies hydraulic pressure to a clutch pack for HI speed, and when it's turned off, the solenoid blocks hydraulic pressure to the clutch pack, and the tractor is driven by a mechanical over-running clutch for LO speed.  Have had a few that would not shift and stayed in LO all the time.  It was usually caused by a blown fuse, broken wire to the solenoid, bad clutch pedal switch, or a blown o-ring on the solenoid.  If you flip the switch back and forth with the key switch on but the engine not running, you can actually hear the internal solenoid click on and off if you are in a quiet enough area to be able to hear it.  Since you've checked the electrical part of it, then it may be a hydraulic problem.  There is a test port on the bottom transmission cover where a gauge can be installed to check TA pressure.  Don't remember the exact pressure anymore, but probably between 250 and 300 psi.  There is a small hydraulic pump inside the transmission to supply TA pressure.  The solenoid and pump can be accessed by removing the bottom transmission cover.  If the TA would have to be removed, the tractor would have to be split and the transmission top cover, pto clutch, and drive shaft would also have to be removed.
