Tractor Repair: IH 674 fuel problem or timing, full stream, dismantler

Question
I purchased a IH 674 that was missing the injection pump. I found a injection pump off a IH 695 after finally geting all the timing marks lined up I got it started, but I for got to change filers. It ranfor an hour or so then got real thready and died. I changed the filters and have not been able to get to start again.I bought this tractor dirt cheap from a dismantler because it was running when they got it,the main problem was broken shifter on low and reverse lever. I have bled the lines, blown air into the tank with no success. the the only I got to run was using a gas soaked rag over the intake. there is fuel at the injectors. I don't know if it is the timing or the pump is bad.I'm thinking about pulling the pump again and taking it the and have it checked. It is not the original pump and does not have the start option, it is a newer pump the same that is on a 695

Answer
Hello,

If you had it running for an hour, then it is not a timing problem.  If there is smoke coming out of the exhaust when you try to start it, then it is getting some fuel, but you don't know how much.  Check that there is good flow from the tank.  This model was notorious for the outlet of the tank plugging with dirt.  It needs to run full stream, not just a little dribble.  With the fuel tank full, bleed the filter out and then loosen all the injection lines at the injectors.  Crank the engine over until fuel squirts out at all the injectors, then tighten the lines back up.  It should start after that.  If not, then it could be an injection pump problem, or an internal engine problem.  I would recommend doing a compression test, then you would know if the engine is OK internally.  It probably would still be a good idea to have the pump checked to make sure it is OK.
