Tractor Repair: JD 1020 charging system, charging system, maximum output

On my JD 1020 at higher rpm I am getting 16 volts. I replaced the regulator and still the same. I had to replace the battery also. I think it cooked the old one.

you may have a bad diode, i can't be 100% on this one as i can't look at it. yes it sounds like the batteries definitely were barbecued. check the wires are all hooked up where they should be and nothing was hooked up backwards. 16 volts sounds like the maximum output, so the question is why is it running at full power? check the wireing.
