Tractor Repair: massey ferguson to35, wooden dowels, massey ferguson

the distributor fell off cause the screw fell off the distributor.  now i can see gears inside the engine broken.  Do i need to take the whole engine apart to fix this.  Is it connected to the camshaft.  Thanks for your time and appreciate any advice

  If the broken gear in the engine is on the camshaft, then part of the engine will have to come apart, but not the whole engine.  To replace the camshaft, the front of the tractor will have to be removed.  Then the valve cover, rocker arms, pushrods, front pulley, and timing cover will have to be removed.  The lifters can be held up with wooden dowels stuck into them and fastened on top of the cylinder head with rubber bands or clothes pins.  Then remove the retainer  bolts behind the camshaft gear and pull the camshaft out.
