Tractor Repair: case 1370 powershift problem, gauge needle, oil distributor

Question
Dear Arnie:
As you suggested I set up a gage and took the pressure readings on the clutches.  Here are the results:
Powershift 1: C1 about 280 psi, C2 0 unless you shift to ps3 then back to ps1, at which point C2 has about 100 psi

Powershift 2: C1 150 psi,  C3 100-120 with the needle vibrating violently between the two pressures.

    Powershift 3:C3 150 psi, C2 110 psi

    Reverse:  C4 200 psi,  C2 20 psi

As far as performance,Starting out I have no powershift 1 and no reverse, I get powershift 2, I get powershift 3, then when I go back to powershift 1 from powershift 3 I get 1 until I apply a load, then it chatters and I eventually lose powershift 1.  Nothing I can do gets reverse, except for a tiny crawl with no resistance.  I appreciate the help you gave me to know to check the pressures.  If you have any ideas on a fix they would be welcome.  I hate to lose this Tractor!  thanks BSA

Answer
Hello,

C2 is always lower than the rest, so there is definitely a problem there.  Anytime you get a gauge needle vibrating, it indicates to me that there is a problem in the oil distributor.  There is probably a bad bearing that is causing the powershift unit to wobble as it spins inside the transmission.  When it wobbles, it wears out the oil distributor and sealing rings.  As it wobbles, it causes the sealing rings in the oil distributor to leak in rhythm with the wobbling which causes the gauge to vibrate.  The tractor will need to be split and the powershift removed and necessary repairs made.  The pressure needs to be 195-210 psi. at all the clutches.
