Tractor Repair: International Harvester 234 oil light, oil pressure gauge, oil pressure switch

Question
Hello William,
I have a Case International Harvester 234 diesel subcompact utility tractor which keep shutting off on me shortly after the oil light goes on. I have changed the oil, filter and checked the oil level on the dip stick. Everything looks good but the light goes on and usually the tractor turns off after 5-10 minutes. Sometimes it does run longer. Any ideas?

Answer
hi Joe
i don't know this tractor but a lot of these utility tractors have safety cut outs that agri tractors don't have so i suspect that  either the oil pressure sensor is faulty or the wiring for it and the engine is being shut off to protect itself
the engine is most likely in no danger
i would check oil pressure first only because if your oil pressure is low your in trouble
and because i have an oil pressure gauge
i expect you don't so next thing i would do is find the oil pressure switch(normally a one wire sensor switch on the engine block)if it is just one wire then plug it out and use the tractor as normal if the problem does not recur the next couple of times you use it then it would be a safe bet to change the oil pressure sensor if it recurs then you probably have a wire shorting somewhere
if I'm wrong and it is a two wire oil sensor let me know and i will let you know how to proceed
hope this helps
