Tractor Repair: David Brown 1210 4 Cylinder Diesel, david, brown

Question

Bad head gasket
I'm in the process of replacing the headgasket on my 1978 Case/David Brown 1210.  Some folks suggest that I replace the head bolts?  Know anywhere I can get a set.  Also, the repair manual calls for a "non-harding" gasket sealer to be applied to both side of the headgasket.  Will "Perm-a-tex" gasket sealer work?  Any other suggestions, beside checking the flatness of the head.  Also, I'm having the values ground.

Answer
i am in Ireland so cant help you with finding head bolts but to be honest i normally re-use them on these engines as the torque isn't that high any way.it only says to use gasket sealer if a copper head gasket is being used if it is composite head gasket no sealant should be used. any high temperature silicone gasket sealer should do for the copper type.there is not much else to check once the head is perfectly flat check all the water hoses internally to see if they are starting to crack replace water pump O ring and worth checking the blades on the water pump as they are often made of nylon an can brake off if the tractor pump became frozen in cold weather if the pump isn't working it could be the original cause of the head gasket blowing
