Tractor Repair: farmall 140 clutch, clutch disk, damp weather

Question
Why is the tractor not going into gear?  When I push the clutch in, the gears still grind and I cant get it into gear. When the trator is off it goes right into the gears. I looked through the bottom inspection plate and the bearing is pushing on the fingers and the plate looks to be moving away. I have tried adjusting the clutch. The trator has not moved in two years. Is somthing stuck? Does the clutch need replaced? The clutch was working before the two year sit time.

Answer
Hello,

The clutch disk is stuck to the flywheel from sitting so long.  The problem gets worse in damp weather or if it sat outside in the weather.  If it has good brakes, you can try starting it in gear, then pushing in the clutch and hitting the brakes real hard to try to break it loose.  If you can't break it loose, then the tractor might need to be split to get to the clutch.
