Tractor Repair: IH 574 Clutch Problems, clutch problems, clutch pedal

Question
I have Hydraulic oil leaking from the center console of my IH 574 below the seat. When you push in the clutch, you are able to put in gear however there is no power to go anywhere but downhill. With the clutch disengaged I can grind gears, but when I have just let out the clutch I am able to slow down the gears enough to get in gear. If I play with the gears and let the clutch out rapidly I am able to get lucky and get some power.  My pto is also running randomly.  What is going on?  Is this a hydraulic problem or a clutch problem?

Answer
Hello,

You have a couple different problems not related to each other.  Hydraulic oil leaking below the seat is a separate issue that will need to be fixed by removing the center console cover to get to it.  The clutch will probably need to be replaced.  First make sure the pedal has some free travel.  Lift up on the clutch pedal to check.  You should be able to lift it up a couple of inches from the normal released position.  Adjust the linkage if necessary.  The pto has a hydraulically applied clutch that is not adjustable.  Check the hydraulic pressure and if it is OK, then the pto will need repairs.
