Tractor Repair: Tractor repair, negative battery, test light

Question
Good evening,
I am a fellow AllExperts volunteer.  I do Home Repair and also Water Treatment.  I have a question about my Power King tractor.  You may have never heard of this brand - it was an economy brand made in the 60's and 70's I think.  Although you said you don't take questions on older tractors I think my question is pretty generic.
I have been having problems starting the tractor and have had to charge the battery the last 2 times before use.  Today I tried to start it and absolutely nothing happened - no clicking, nothing.  I replaced the battery with a brand new battery and still nothing.
That is the extent of what I know to do.  Do you have any suggestions on what it could be.  Also, is there a way to start the tractor by bypassing the voltage regulator/alternator if that is the problem?
Thanks very much for your help!!
Steve

Answer
Sorry took a while to respond, busy weekend. Anyways you need to check your safety switches. One for neutral start if it has a pto there is a switch there. Hydro pedals, seat switch etc. After you get it started then you need to check what it is charging at. If the battery is completely dead again then you have something energized when the key is off. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and install a test light between the ground of the cable and the ground of the battery. If the test light is lit then you have something energized. Start disconnecting connectors until the light goes out or goes dim. That will be were your problem is. Follow up if you need more help.
