Tractor Repair: 706 german diesel alternator, delco alternator, jumper wire

Question
I need to replace the alternator on my 706. From what I've read and heard, best option is to replace with a delco internally regulated alternator from a salvage yard.  Exactly what do I need to ask for, and how do I hook up without the voltage regulator?

Thanks
Harry

Answer
Hello,

You can either use a Delco alternator with internal regulator which uses 3 wires, or a one-wire self exciting alternator.  Anyone should know what you mean when you ask for them.  With the Delco internal regulator alternator, you hook up the large output wire to the large output terminal with the nut, and then hook up a short jumper wire from the output terminal to the flat spade terminal of the alternator that is the farthest away from the output terminal.  On the flat spade terminal that is closest to the output terminal, hook up a wire that is powered by the key switch.  With the one-wire alternator, all you have to do is attach the large output wire to the output terminal, and no other wires are needed.  With either type of alternator, bypass the regulator by hooking the BAT wire and the ARM wires together.  The one-wire alternator is a little more expensive and you will have to speed the engine up after starting it before it starts to charge.
