Tractor Repair: 6600 Ford Safety Switch, ford tractor, shift forks

Question
I recently purchased a 6600 Ford tractor. Good condition, but allot of little things need attention. The tractor used to start by jiggling the Hi-Lo shifter, but doesn't now. I purchased a cheap repair manual that identifies a "Safety Switch" and it vaguely hints it is under then lg. top plate on the transmission. How difficult is it to adjust or replace this switch? If I remove the cover to troubleshoot the switch, will there be surprises? Like aligning the shiftrs back up or something I shouldn't have taken loose.I have gotten myself in trouble before by diving in and trying not to do it again. Not as easy to work on as the old Super M Farmall. Thanks for any assistance.  G

Answer
Hello,

There is a neutral start switch under the transmission top cover.  It should not be difficult to replace.  As long as the shift forks are not moved after the cover is removed, you should not have to align anything but the locating pin that goes into the piece that the neutral switch is mounted on.  While installing the cover, make sure this piece is aligned with the pin or the switch won't work.  You can see a breakdown of the parts by going to newholland.com, select agriculture, then select North America.  Click on parts and services, then click on parts search.  Type your model into the search box and click search, then select your model from the results.  Go to the transmission section, and you will be able to see pictures of all the parts along with the part numbers.
