Tractor Repair: Ford New Holland 1920 Solenoid, ford newholland, ford new holland

Question
Hi My Ford Newholland 1920 starts fine, but the solenoid stays engaged even though the switch is only in the run position.  The starter cranks when the switch is just turned on and not to start.  I assume it's the solenoid.  Is it directly attached to the starter? Can it ever be cleaned, or loosened so it will work or does it mean a replacement only.  Also can I pull it easily myself outside. or does it need a shop expert.  Thanks You

Answer
Hello,

Actually, this doesn't sound like a solenoid problem.
If the solenoid was stuck on, it would keep cranking even with the key switch in the off position and you would have to remove a battery cable to get it to stop.  If it stops cranking in the off position, then the key switch should be checked first to determine if it is energizing the solenoid in the on position instead of the start position.  If so, you need a new key switch.  If not, then there is probably a short in the wiring.  The solenoid should be mounted on the starter. If you do ever need to remove the starter or solenoid, it should be fairly easy to remove it yourself.  There is no way to repair a solenoid, if faulty it must be replaced.
