Tractor Repair: 1283 New Holland Baler, baler twine, twines

Question
QUESTION: My baler twine appears not to be tightening on the bales. They (bales) are falling apart or have a banana shape to them.

ANSWER: Hello,

I will need more info on the bales falling apart.  Are the knots tied but the twines are loose, or are the knots not tied correctly?  If increasing the bale tension does not get the twines tight enough, wedges can be added in the bale chamber to increase the tension even more.  If the knots are not tied correctly, there are too many possible reasons for me to list here.

If the bales have a banana shape, the feeder arm is not feeding enough hay into one side of the bale chamber.  The tines can be moved on the tine bar to feed more hay to the left or right side to get an even bale.

QUESTION: The bales are the right length and are tied. I have increased the tension to about 300.

Answer
Part of the problem of loose twines might be solved by fixing the banana bale problem first.  Make sure there are no broken or missing feeder tines, and adjust the position of the tines until the bales are no longer banana shaped.  That might take some trial and error until you find the right position.
