Tractor Repair: Case-Ih 685 Tractor, morning chores, excess fuel

Question
I have never liked this tractor.  Always something wrong that needs fixing.  Needs a 2nd alternator, but my question is is there a easy way to start in cold weather.  No glow plug system, I have to keep it plugged in to use all the time.

Thanks Paul

Answer
Hello,

When you pull the knob to shut off the engine, if you feel the knob pull out easier about half way and then pull harder the rest of the way, then there is an excess fuel device on the injection pump.  Pulling the stop knob out half way while starting will activate this device and make it start easier in cold weather.  All of the ones I have seen around here have an electric starting fluid injector activated by a button below the dash panel.  Pushing this button for about 1 second while cranking the engine will inject some starting fluid into the intake manifold.  Most people around here leave a tractor plugged in all the time in the winter when they use it every day to clean the barn or feed the cows.  Some put it on a timer so that it will turn on the heater about an hour and a half before they start the morning chores.  On the large tractors, they have a transmission oil heater plugged in besides the engine heater.
