Tractor Repair: 574 International Tractor Desiel, pto drive shaft, brush hog

Question
QUESTION: PTO just quit working? I checked linkage and seems to be working but power take-off will not come on. Hydraulic lift is working. Any information you have would be helpful. Thank you.

ANSWER: Hello,

There is a tee fitting in the oil line that goes to the pto clutch
where a gauge can be hooked up to check pto pressure.  The tee fitting is screwed into the side of the rear frame housing (left side??)  If there is no pressure, then possibly the regulated pressure spool in the MCV valve is sticking, or the MCV valve gasket is blown.  If there is pressure, then there is either a problem in the pto clutch, or the pto drive shaft is broken.

QUESTION: Thank you for your help.

Could you help me with another question please?  On the multiple control valve I took off all the fittings off that I could and the valves off of them as well.  After I put it back together then I took the end off the T and started the tractor, raised the hydraulic lift up and down; kicked the pto on and it worked okay.  I hooked the brush hog back up and it seems to be working fine now.  How much fluid or pressure should be coming out of the T valve?  How much fluid should come out when the T valve is unscrewed?  With the T valve end off should the pto be on or off?  How should I check or would it be better to rebuild the whole valve body or totally replace it?  Thanks again for all your help!

Answer
If you take the cap off the tee fitting and hook up a pressure gauge to it, there should be about 300 psi with the pto on.  There should be no pressure with the pto off.  It's a very small fitting that uses about a 5/16" JIC flare, so there won't be alot of flow, but it's to measure pressure anyway, not flow.  If it is working OK now, I would leave it alone and not take the valve body apart.  If you have more problems later, it would be best to repair the valve rather than replace it.  A new one would cost half as much as the tractor is worth.
