Tractor Repair: Ford 6600 Tractor, ford 6600, valve plugs

Question
I have an ageing but reliable tractor that recently slowed and stopped. A fuel filter change seemed to solve the symptom but within 2 weeks and a minimum of work the problem has returned although now it only goes to stop but then picks up. This is not constant but intermittant. I have checked the lift pump and found that this does not have a filter but has clearly been running without one for some years. Is this a problem with the lift pump itself or accumulated muck around the small filter in the tank or air in the system? If the suspect is the lift pump, can repair kits be purchased or a replacement advisable?

Answer
Hello,

First I would check the flow of fuel from the tank.  Disconnect the fuel line and make sure that it runs full stream out of the tank.  Dirt frequently builds up at the tank outlet and restricts the flow.  There is a small screen inside the tank, but the shut off valve plugs up also.  The fuel system could be sucking air into the fuel somewhere.  Check all fittings and clamps for tightness and if there are rubber or plastic fuel lines, check them for cracking and replace as necessary.  I can't find any repair kit listed for the lift pump.  If there's a problem with it, I guess you will have to replace it.

                    Good luck,
