Tractor Repair: CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT, ford tractor, throttle lever

Question
I HAVE A NAA FORD TRACTOR AND WHEN IT WARMS-UP THE ENGINE LOPES UP AND DOWN.  CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO ADJUST THE CARBURETOR?  THANK YOU!

Answer
Hello,

Normally, the adjusting screws are turned all the way in and then turned out one and a half turns as a starting point.  Then they may have to be tweaked a little from that point.  Warm the engine up and with the engine idling, slowly adjust the idle mixture screw in and out until the engine idles the smoothest.  Then run it full throttle and adjust the high speed screw until it runs smooth, but does not smoke.  If it sputters a under load, turn it out a little.  If it starts to smoke black, turn it in a little.  The carburetor adjustment may or may not cure the surging problem.  If the governor needs work, it still will not cure the problem.  Check to make sure the governor rod is adjusted correctly by disconnecting the rod at the carburetor, and setting the throttle lever at wide open.  Move the arm on the carburetor so that the throttle butterfly is wide open, and you should be able to hook the rod back up without moving anything.  Lengthen or shorten the rod as necessary to synchronize the governor and carburetor.

                      Good luck,
