Tractor Repair: ford 9n oil pump, 9n ford tractor, ford 9n

Question
after overhauling my 9n ford tractor i was sweeping the floor, and found a small ball bearing.. when i started my tractor, i had no oil pressure. does this ball bearing belong in the oil pump for pressure? i need a breakdown of the oil pump.. thanks

Answer
Hello,

There is no ball bearing in the oil pump, so it couldn't have come from there.   I can't think of anywhere it would be used on this tractor.  Possibly it isn't even from this tractor.  Maybe it was already on the floor from something else.  The only place I know of to see a breakdown of the pump is if you go to servicemotor.com, click on parts and online parts lookup, then click on New Holland, and in the model search box type in 9N.  Select 9N tractor in the search results, and then select "engine assembly inside".  You will see a picture of the crankshaft, oil pump, etc.  There is only the shaft and 2 gears inside the pump.  The oil pressure relief valve on the front of the engine only has a spring and a plunger so there's no ball bearing in there either.  If you can't get any oil pressure, possibly something didn't go together correctly when it was overhauled.  I would suggest checking the relief valve to make sure it isn't stuck open or something.  Next, I would recommend removing the oil pump and checking that the oil holes line up correctly in the pump and the main bearings  I have also seen oil pumps damaged when the main bearing bolts were torqued because there was not enough clearance between the drive gears.

                 Good luck,
