Tractor Repair: Ford 6600 hydraulics, ford 6600, bush hog

Question
Sir- I have a Ford 6600 that I'm experiencing a hydraulic problem with. When I have an attachment hooked to the 3pt., such as a bush hog, the hydraulics want to chatter and either drop the attachment below the desired level or the attachment comes all the way up. In other words it will not hold at the desired level. Am I looking at a pump problem or an adjustment problem. Fluids and filter are all new and at appropriate levels.

Thanks for Your insight
Maureen

Answer
Hello,

If it has enough power to lift it even though it won't stay at the desired height, then it's not a pump problem.  There could be something wrong with the draft control linkage, the hitch valve, or the lift cylinder and piston.  Raise the implement all the way up and shut off the engine.  If the hitch drops fast enough for you to see it move, then either the lift piston seal is leaking, or there is a bad check valve in the hitch control valve.
