Tractor Repair: case 580 engine oil leak, engine oil leak, case 580

Question
My case 580 had a bad engine oil leak. The dealer sold me a rear seal repair kit with a wear sleeve. I installed it and 3 months later It again has a bad leak. 10 gallons per day. What should I do next time I pull the engine?

Answer
Hello,

Make sure the seal was installed correctly.  The seal and sleeve should be installed together as a unit, not taken apart and installed individually.  There is a seal installer that will push both pieces in at the same time, and will ensure they are straight and at the proper depth.  Don't overlook the seal housing itself.  There might be a leak between it and the block.  Also make sure the crankshaft surface is free of nicks and gouges and is clean.  Also check the rear of the engine block to make sure it is not leaking from an expansion plug, camshaft plug, etc.
