Tractor Repair: 1320 Ford tractor PTO clutch, clutch pressure plate, jam nuts

Question
Can you explain how to adjust the clutch to disengage the PTO unit on my Ford 1320 tractor? The drive clutch works good but the PTO won't disengage. The tractor has 1150 hours on the hour meter.

Answer
Hello,

First adjust the pedal so it has about an inch and a half of free travel.  If it has too much, that may be the problem.  Once the free travel is correct, remove the access cover on the side of the clutch housing and adjust the bolts on the clutch pressure plate that release the pto clutch.  There are usually 3 bolts with jam nuts equally spaced around the outside of the pressure plate, and there should be about a .060 gap between the end of the bolts and the pressure plate.  This will allow the drive clutch enough movement to operate correctly before it pushes on the bolts to release the pto clutch.  When it is adjusted correctly you will feel it while pushing the pedal.  You will feel the drive clutch releasing until the pedal is about 3/4 of the way down, and then the pedal will push harder as the pto clutch starts to release.  This way, you can push the pedal down enough to stop the tractor, but still keep the pto turning unless you push the pedal all the way down.
