Tractor Repair: International 806, shift linkage, international 806

Question
I have an International 806 Tractor and sometimes when I go to shift it seems to fall out of gear, like they are not meshing correctly this happens in high range and sometimes low range. I checked the clutch and it is fine and the free play is perfect. Could it be the shift linkage is out of adjustment and if so how do I re adjust it. Or could it be the hydraulic fluid filter being clogged or dirty?

Answer
Hello,

It could be that the shift linkage is just too worn out, this is very common on these tractors.  The platform would have to be removed unless you can see under it well enough to see if something is loose or worn out on top of the range transmission.  Also, the linkage that goes from the range shift lever down behind the dash to the park lever lockout also has a habit of getting very loose and sloppy resulting in the lever hitting the end of it's travel before it moves the shift forks in the transmission far enough to fully engage the gears.  If the linkages seem OK and it is fully engaging, but it sort of "falls" out of gear, the internal detents under the range transmission cover are not working because the detent roller spring is probably broken.  In that case, the platform and range cover have to be removed to repair it.  The linkage rods under the platform have to be adjusted so that High and Low range can be selected without the lever hitting the end of it's travel before it's all the way into gear.  The hydraulic filter has nothing to do with the shifting.
