Tractor Repair: Farmall Super A, carburetor body, sediment bowl

Question
This super A used to run fine but lately when I drive over rough terrain the tractor will sputter and die ,unless I can reach the choke in time, and then she will run fine until I hit the next bump.Any ideas?

Answer
Hello,

If pulling out the choke keeps it running when this happens, then it is definitely starving for fuel.  Remove the sediment bowl from the fuel tank or remove the fuel line from the carburetor and turn on the petcock to see how much fuel flow you have.  It has to run full stream to supply enough fuel when the engine is under load.  If there is just a little dribble or if it just drips, then there is a restriction either in the tank or in the petcock.  If so, then the fuel will have to be siphoned or drained out and the petcock removed from the tank and blown out with air.  Also, the float in the carburetor could be sticking or set too low.  If the other things don't help, drain the float bowl and disassemble the carburetor, clean it out, and check that the float has free movement and is not binding inside the bowl, and that it is adjusted so that it sits level with the carburetor body when it is turned upside down.

               Good luck,
