Tractor Repair: 350 International Tractor 1957 Vintage, volt battery, cyl gas

Question
I have a 1957 International 350 Utility (4 Cyl gas). Was running great until the guys at my camp removed the 6 volt battery and then put it back on backwards (poles reversed on a 6 volt and they did not know that). They tried to start the tractor with reversed hook up for some time. I have correctly hooked up the battery and replaced coil, plugs, rotor, condenser and points. Tractor will turn over but has no fire. I actually held the plug in hand to see if it would zap me and no fire. Could something else be damaged? Any ideas on what to try next (celenoid, ignition switch, voltage regulator, battery shot)? I am not a mechanic but can follow directions. Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

No, reversing the battery polarity should not have damaged anything else.  If any damage was done, it should have only affected the charging system.  You have already replaced everything on the ignition system except the wires and distributor cap.  First, you need to see if there is power getting from the ignition switch to the coil using a test light or volt meter.  If there is no power to the + terminal of the coil with the switch on, check the switch and wiring.  If there is power, then look to see if the points spark as they are opening and closing.  If not, check the wire from the - coil terminal to the points.  Inspect the distributor cap or replace it.  Test the wire between the coil and the center of the distributor cap, or try a different one.  With a new coil, points and condenser, rotor, and cap, there are no possibilities left except the coil wire, or no power to the coil.

             Good luck,
